Fastnacht

I was fortunate enough to attend my first exhibition at London. Although it is beneficial for any art student to explore various exhibitions, it is also something which I enjoy doing.

Fastnacht - I still can't pronounce this word, yet it remains in my memory. One of the most interesting exhibitions I've ever been to. This photography exhibition displays work of a German photographer who has recorded a pre-lenten carnival at Germany. His pictures were taken in 2008, yet he has captured this event in such a manner, that it has a historic feel to it.

Fastnacht means the night before fasting. Expecting to see pictures of a festive carnival, I walk into a sea of masks staring right at me. The atmosphere is eerie, but that was what blew me away. Masks of different materials, bear costumes, all particular to this region where these pictures were captured. The masks are frightening, which serves its purpose of being used to ward away the spirits of winter.

This is definitely not to be missed!
Location: London College of Fashion - Fashion Space Gallery
